You can lose the mitochondrial genome (ie rho- strains)
but I think not the mitochondrion itself which is coded for mostly
by chromosomal genes. Actually if I recall correctly,
the cerevisiae mitochondrion besides being specialized in oxidative
phosphorylation plays other,essential roles. I remember
membrane biosynthesis,proline utilization. Am I right?
