intracellular pH?

Can anyone direct me to literature on intracellular (cytoplasmic) pH,
particularly in neurons? It's "common knowledge" that "physiological pH"
is around 7.4. Where does this information come from? Does this refer to
the serum or the intracellular environment? To what extent has
intracellular pH actually been measured?
