PARP cleavage and apoptosis

PARP (poly ADP ribose polymerase) cleavage is downstream of ICE-like
protease action in the induction of apoptosis. However, does PARP
cleavage (as demonstrated by Western blot) necessarily imply apoptosis
as the mechanism of cell death? Does a time course demonstration of the
absence of PARP cleavage (spanning a period of time when cell death is
morphologically observed) exclude apoptosis? Also, any tips on
detecting PARP cleavage, especially using the new anti-PARP antibodies
from Boehringer, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
