Function of Cholesterol in cell membrane

I have difficulties in checking the functions of cholesterol in cell
membrane.

According to Understanding Biology for AL 3rd Ed by Glenn and Susan Toole,
it covers the cholesterol function as "interacting with the phospholipids
to make the membrane less fluid", but according to some Functional
Histology text references, on the other hand, they usually mention that
"cholesterol prevents the lipids to solidify". There is a contrasting
between them. May I know the functions and the background reasons for the
cholesterol functions?

Thanks a lot for the readers' response.

Best Regards,
A HK student
