Oxidative Damage to DNA

I am studying oxidative damage to mtDNA. To measure damage to the DNA,
I degrade the DNA, remove the phosphates, and run the nucleotides on an
HPLC using an electo-chemical detector. I detect primarily
8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanine. I have been told that this is the major
oxidative product in DNA.
My question is: is this true? Can anyone give me a referrence that shows
that 8OHdG is the major oxidative product to DNA?

Thank you in advance,
Michael Gregory
