Michelle,
Unless you want to actually watch cells undergoing mitosis and time 
the stages, you can get a relative time frame by looking at the onion 
root tip sections, counting the numbers of cells you see in each 
stage.  The more cells you see in a given stage the longer that stage 
probab;y lasts relative to the others.  The trick is to count many 
cells (at least 1000), so that you can apply statistical analysis to 
your results.
