Reporter gene to be tested in live cells

Hi,
   I have seen a thread on reporter genes use in this group some days
ago. I am new to molecular biology techniques. I wonder if there is a
way to test for a reporter gene in individual cells, without killing
them (so they are usable for physiological recording after testing the
gene is there), and without interfering with later experiments
(specifically, using fura-2 probe).
	Any suggestions?
