I wish to join Bob Bloodgood and others in supporting the arguments of Peter
Luykx in favour of all lower case designations. My view is that the system is
simpler and has been thoroughly road-tested by those who work with S. pombe,
whose publications show no ambiguity that I am aware of. When it is required
to designate wild type the superscript + can be used. Confusion with mating
type can be avoided by using mt, as has been suggested.
