ALGAE-L is an e-mail public discussion list for phycologists and others
interested in algae. The list is simply for the distribution of messages
of
common interest to those who subscribe. Please join as the more persons
there are, the more useful the list will be. There is absolutely no charge
or
obligation and, if you wish, you can sign off the list at a later stage.
If you have no experience of such lists, let me explain: a public list is a
list of addresses to which anybody can send a message which is then
distributed
to every address on that list. Usually, it is some news (jobs, book
details,
etc.) but it can be announcements, requests for information, specimens,
etc.
If you do get a message to which you wish to reply, please DO NOT do an
automatic "REPLY" as your message will go to all the members of the list.
Respond to the person individually. Very often, people who send out a
particularly query will summarise for the list (if there is a demand for
this).
I cannot subscribe on your behalf and that you must follow this procedure:
1. SUBSCRIBING
Send a mail message to LISTSERV at IRLEARN.UCD.IE [please note that it is
NOT
"LISTSERVER" but "LISTSERV"] with no subject heading and the single line:
SUB ALGAE-L followed, on the same line by your first name and your second
name
[please note that it is NOT "ALGAL-L"].
2. REVIEWING
Send a mail message to LISTSERV at IRLEARN.UCD.IE [please note that it is
NOT
"LISTSERVER" but "LISTSERV"] with no subject heading and the single line:
REVIEW ALGAE-L
This will result in your being sent a list of all the current members that
have
subscribed to ALGAE-L.
3. SENDING A MESSAGE
To send a message to all the people currently subscribed to the list, just
send
your mail message to ALGAE-L at IRLEARN.UCD.IE. This is called "sending
mail to
the list", because you send mail to a single address and LISTSERV makes
copies
for all the people who have subscribed. Be sure to include your e-mail
address at the end of any such message. Try not to send frivolous messages
as
people will rapidly signoff the list and its effect will be diminished.
