> Re: Amendment to Restore Funding to the NIH
>
> BACKGROUND
>
> The Senate Budget Committee has reported to the Floor a proposed
> Budget Resolution to the the FY 1996 NIH funding by 10%. Senator
> Hatfield (R-OR) is expected to offer his amendment on the Senate Floor to
> restore funding to the NIH on Monday, May 22nd. Senator Hatfield states
> that the proposed 10% reduction and freeze in funding for the NIH through
> 2002 is much deeper because the proposed budget exempts certain programs
> in the same budget category, such as the Centers for Disease Control,
> Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services and AIDS research. The
> remaining NIH programs could be cut by as much as 16% to 20%.
>
> ACTION NEEDED
>
> This is one of the two most important action requests that the CLC
> will undertake this funding cycle. Please contact your Senator and ask
> him or her to VOTE FOR SENATOR HATFIELD'S AMENDMENT TO RESTORE FUNDING TO
> THE NIH IN THE BUDGET RESOLUTION. Given the short timeframe, please make
> your contacts to both of your Senators by telephone. The amendment, if
> offered, enjoys bipartisan support and has a very good chance of being
> adopted.
>
> Contact the U.S. Capitol switchboard and ask to be connected to your
> Senator's office. The switchboard number is 202-224-3121. Distribute
> this notice to all your colleagues, students, friends, neighbors, and
> family.
>
> If the Hatfield amendment is adopted and cuts to the NIH are not
> included in the Budget Resolution, the NIH will be in a much better
> position in the appropriations process to increase FY 1996 funding. The
> CLC will then alert you to action taken with the Appropriations
> Committee.

I called my senator this afternoon (Friday, May 19) and his office had
not heard of the Hatfield amendment. Clearly, he has not yet been
flooded with calls. Please call ASAP. Pete Lefebvre
