 HEAD OF CULTURE COLLECTION OF ALGAE AND PROTOZOA AT
DUNSTAFFNAGE MARINE LABORATORY




        Location:       Dunstaffnage Marine Laboratory, Oban

Duties: The postholder will have overall charge of the Culture Collection
of Algae and Protozoa (CCAP) maintained at Dunstaffnage Marine
Laboratory and will carry out research on algae and related organisms
using molecular techniques.

He/She will be responsible for running the culture collection and will
manage a staff of 2-3 who will carry out the day to day work of
maintaining the cultures and supplying them to customers.  Approximately
20% of the post-holder's time will be spent on running the collection and it
is expected that for the main part of their work the successful applicant
will initiate a research programme using molecular genetic techniques to
investigate marine algal taxonomy.  This research activity will form part of
the core programme of the CCMS.

Applicants should have wide theoretical and practical experience in a
range of molecular techniques and have some knowledge of aspects of
algal physiology, biochemistry or taxonomy.

                                The status of the post is fluid graded.

        Grades Eligible:        Suitably qualified staff for level transfer or
transfer on promotion.
