HUMAN GENOME PROJECT: Tools Demonstrating Standardization of Genetic Information
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 18, 1992
RAMADA HOTEL, Clark, NJ
Evening Schedule: 5:30-6:30 Social Hour
6:30-7:30 Dinner
7:30-8:30 Presentation by Dr. Karl Sirotkin,
National Center for Biotechnology Information,
National Library of Medicine
The Human Genome Project is an international effort to locate and identify
our genes. Karl Sirotkin, a research computational biologist, is involved
with the software development used to describe genetic information - enter
and recover information from genetic databases.
TOPICS COVERED: How can genetic information systems be used to advance
medical research? What role does and will the Human Genome Project have
in bringing this about? How can the format for genetic data representation
allow one to uncover biological connections between genes and independent
reports of sequence information in different databases? It is difficult to
create software which allows such linkages to be made because there is no
standard in genetic databases for data exchange and syntax. Dr. Sirotkin
will present a standard that keeps the software development load for
database communications linear, and he will demonstrate a program which
utilizes this standard to integrate literature (Medline) information,
protein and DNA sequences, and nearest neighbor relationships between
them, in order to uncover biological connections.
