Announcing an Opportunity for
Undergraduate Student Research in Computational Science
Spring 1993 Session
The National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of
Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), is conducting an NSF funded program of
Research Experiences in Computational Science for Undergraduate Students.
The program brings to NCSA students from colleges and universities across
the United States for a full semester internship of research. The fall
1992 program is already underway and applicants are being sought for the
spring 1993 term. Students are chosen through a national competition and
are matched with an NCSA research project in accordance with their
interests and background and by mutual agreement. All expenses are paid
and a stipend is provided.
The focus of the program is the application of computational technology to
scientific research in fields such as biology, chemistry, engineering,
physics, and social science. There is a special emphasis on leading edge
technology, including parallel computing and data visualization, necessary
to make progress on frontier scientific problems. The program will
provide undergraduates in their junior or senior year with:
% An exciting experience at the front-line of research and technology:
% enough time to carry a project to completion,
% mini-symposium at the end of the program to present results.
% A solid foundation for future work in computational science:
% training on vectorization, parallelization and visualization,
% weekly seminars for education in computational science basics,
% work on parallelization and visualization with an ongoing research
project.
% Integration into the professional culture:
% work in teams with graduate students, NCSA staff and faculty,
% mentoring by NCSA consultants, post-docs and graduate students,
% mentoring by UIUC computational science students.

Program Timelines
October 15, 1992 Deadline for full consideration.
November 1, 1992 Selection of participants for the spring.
November, 1992 Students select project and faculty advisor.
January 6,1993 Training and Orientation period begin.
June 5,1993 End of research period (21 weeks).
June 8-10,1993 Mini symposium for all students (Fall & Spring).
Who may apply:
% junior and senior undergraduate students who are citizens or permanent
residents for the United States and its possessions.
NCSA especially encourages applications from students attending liberal
arts colleges, small universities, and institutions serving populations
underrepresented in the scientific and engineering professions. NCSA will
work, when needed, to arrange for internship or co-op leaves for students
of such institutions.
