                          Preliminary Announcement

About the Workshop
The organizers of WEB01 would like to invite you to participate
in the first workshop on Education in Bioinformatics, on July 26,
2001 at Copenhagen, Denmark. This workshop is scheduled
immediately after the ISMB01 (http://ismb01.cbs.dtu.dk/), July
     21-25, 2001.

Background and Aims
In response to the worldwide shortage of trained
bioinformaticians, several universities and institutes have
     spearheaded Bioinformatics teaching and research.

This workshop will bring together Bioinformatics educators for
the first time to meet, discuss and exchange ideas and
suggestions. WEB01 will address fundamental issues that will
determine the nature, extent, content and delivery tools
available for Bioinformatics programs embarked upon, as well as
provide valuable lessons for focus and improvement of nascent
     Bioinformatics programs.

Besides oral presentation sessions, the workshop will feature a
tutorial on how to set up a Bioinformatics teaching program.

     Participant profile will include:

        * educators and students currently involved in programs or
          modules in Bioinformatics

        * Deans, Vice-Deans and Heads of Faculty/Department and Senior
Faculty, interested in starting a Bioinformatics teaching
          and research program.

Venue, Registration and Accommodation
The meeting will be held on July 26th in Tivoli Gardens,

WEB01 registration will be normally be along with ISMB01
registration. Participants who are not registering for ISMB01
but would like to attend this workshop alone can do so at the
ISMB01 online form, without making any selection against "Status"
     - contact Shoba Ranganathan (shoba at bic.nus.edu.sg) in case of

ISMB01 conference rates will be extended to cover the extra day

Hotels. Hotel reservation should be made along with workshop

Workshop Program
This day-long meeting will comprise four sessions as follows:

Session 1: Education in Bioinformatics: Current Trends and

        * World-wide Initiatives in Bioinformatics Education: e.g. S*
          Global Life Science Alliance
        * Course Curriculum
        * Training Programs in Niche Areas

Session 2: Bioinformatics Course Delivery: Tools and

        * Essential Bioinformatics infrastructure and resources
        * Computer Supported Learning (CSL): Technology and Pedagogy
        * Comparison of Bioinformatics service providers and in-house

Session 3: Tutorial on "Starting a new Bioinformatics Program"

     Session 4: Discussion

Abstract Submission
Participants interested in making a short oral presentation in
Sessions 1 or 2 are requested to submit a 150 word abstract in to
the program committee (email either shoba at bic.nus.edu.sg,
