BioGEC-2002
BIOLOGICAL APPLICATIONS OF GENETIC AND EVOLUTIONARY
COMPUTATION
Bird-of-a-feather Workshop
at the
Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference 2002
(GECCO-2002)
July 9-13, 2002 (Tuesday - Saturday)
New York City, New York, USA
to be held on Tuesday, July 9, 2002
WORKSHOP SUMMARY
The field of Genetic and Evolutionary Computation has greatly benefited
by borrowing ideas from Biology. Recently, it has become clear that GEC
can help solve biological problems, and thereby to "repay the debt".
It is also becoming apparent that the computer itself can be used as a
model organism with which to study evolutionary processes in nature.
The workshop on Biological Applications of Genetic and Evolutionary
Computation, organized in connection with the 4th GECCO conference in
New York, is intended to serve as a catalyst for using GEC to answer
biological questions. By bringing together biologists and computer
scientists the exchange of the latest ideas on problems and problem
solving techniques will be facilitated.
The workshop invites discussion on general issues in this area,
including (but not limited to):
+ Data mining in biological data bases
+ Sequence alignment
+ Phylogenetic reconstruction
+ Gene expression and regulation, alternate splicing
+ Functional diversification through gene duplication and exon
shuffling
+ Structure Prediction for biological molecules (structural
genomics
and
proteomics)
+ Network reconstruction for developmental, expression, catalysis,
etc.
+ Dynamical system approaches to biological systems
+ Simulation of cells, viruses, organisms, and ecologies
For a reasonable crossover between the scientific customs in Biology and
Computer Science the review process for the workshop will be rather
relaxed.
The best papers will be invited to contribute to a Special Issue of the
Journal "Genetic Programming and Evolvable Machines", to be published
after
the workshop.
The workshop organizers will consider bringing in survey or tutorial
speakers
if appropriate. Workshop papers need to be presented in compact form to
allow
more time for discussion than for presentation.
PARTICIPATION
Presentations will be selected according to 1-3 page abstracts
to be submitted to the workshop organizers.
Criteria for selection of papers for the workshop include
+ Paper addresses an important question in modern biology
+ Paper uses GEC in an important way
+ Paper helps to provide some diversity in terms of problems
discussed at the workshop
+ Paper fosters discussion and interaction
Accepted abstracts will be published in the workshop proceedings.
Please, send 1-3 page abstracts by February 15, 2002, to
banzhaf at cs.uni-dortmund.de and foster at cs.uidaho.edu.
IMPORTANT DATES (subject to change)
Abstract submission deadline: February 15, 2002
Decisions will be mailed by: March 15, 2002
Submissions of camera-ready abstracts: April 19, 2002
Workshop in New York: July 9, 2002
