"Varying life spans of different life forms"

Hi,

This is for a session we plan to have
with working children who attend school
during the evenings. We wanted to delve
into the following topic. So...

I am looking for information on "why
life spans are so varying amongst various
life forms"

while there are some animals whose life
spans days, there are others who have
average life spans of years.

And, the oldest living tree is I believe
4000+ years old.

How is this possible. what is that determines
this. What is the research and information
available on this aspect as of today.

I would appreciate any information or
pointers to books, articles, etc that
would provide more info.

Thanks,

Vijay Kirpalani
