Post-Doctoral Research Position in Marine Geology,
Marine Geoscience Research Group, Dept. Earth Sciences, University
of Wales Cardiff, U.K.

A Natural Environment Research Council post-doctoral research
associateship is available to work with Dr. Chris MacLeod on tectonic
and magmatic processes in the lower crust and shallow mantle of the
very-slow-spreading SW Indian Ridge. The successful applicant will
sail on a forthcoming cruise to survey Atlantis Bank (ODP Site 735) on
RRS James Clark Ross in late March 1998. He/she will assist in the

ROPOS remotely-operated vehicle; also in describing gabbro and
peridotite rock cores from the British Geological Survey portable rock
drills, and dredge samples.

The scientific programme to be carried out post cruise will depend
upon the expertise of the candidate. Experience in one or more of the
following fields is preferred: (i) the petrology/geochemistry of
gabbroic rocks; (ii) processing and interpretation of marine
geophysical and image data, and GIS; (iii) structural (especially
microstructural) processes in the lower oceanic crust.

The successful candidate will have or shortly have a Ph.D. They will
be based in Cardiff, and will have access to all departmental
facilities including laser ablation ICP-MS, SEM, and UNIX
workstations. The position is tenable for one year in the first
instance, with the possibility of further extension. The salary will be
on the NERC PDRA scale, in the range UK#15,159 to UK#22,785,
depending on age and experience.

position will be filled as soon as possible, so do not delay.
