Dear Sir

I am from INDIA and I am doing a Project for

Hydrothermal Vents.

Ever since I read about Deep Sea Hydrothermal Vents in

an issue of Time International magazine, I have become

extremely fascinated with these deep-sea underwater

entities. Some of the literature I have read on the

subject has described one of the properties of

hydrothermal vents to be that of the desalination,

namely, the removal of magnesium salts from the Ocean

Water that is expelled from its channels. The article

states that all of the oceans' water passes through a

hydrothermal vent once every 6 to 8 million years -

thus keeping the salinity of the ocean at a constant

level.

I am doing a project at College and would be extremely

grateful and indebted to you if you could give me

further information about the role of hydrothermal

vents in:

1. The hypothetical properties of oceans today if

hydrothermal vents were not there to perform the task

of removing Magnesium Salts from them. Would the

oceans be highly viscous and similar to the Dead Sea?

(This is a very important question of which related

answers are not available anywhere in Reference Books

here in INDIA in the city of Rakjot which is a small

town, so this one question I would request you to

please guide me on.)

2. Would such an ocean be able to form the rainwater

clouds that nourish the continents today?

3. What is the size of the apertures in the seabed

through which seawater percolates into a hydrothermal

vent? Are there cracks in the ocean bed or is the

ocean bed porous with microscopic / pin head openings?

Thanking You,

Vinod Talreja.
