From james from gviworld.com Tue May 12 15:48:49 2009 From: james from gviworld.com (james@gviworld.com) Date: Wed May 13 03:14:02 2009 Subject: [Deepsea] Seychelles marine expeditions with Global Vision International Message-ID: Dear Sir or Madam, Global Vision International is seeking expedition members with knowledge of marine life to participate in scuba diving surveys and marine conservation projects in the Seychelles. Expedition members are needed for periods of 5, 10 and 15 weeks to join the GVI marine research teams. Dive training is available if required, up to PADI Divemaster. Activities include coral reef and fish monitoring surveys, turtle research, and environmental education and awareness programs. There is a free careers abroad field work placement and job vacancy service for former expedition members. The expedition training programme provides the skills necessary for research diving and marine survey work in order to accurately collect data and identify fish and coral. PADI Coral Reef Researcher Specialty is also available as part of this program. The Seychelles At the invitation of the Seychelles government, the GVI expedition team assists local biological studies and conservation programs throughout the island. The focus is on coral and fish diversity and abundance, along with coral recruitment studies. This has been extremely important following the massive coral bleaching that occurred here in 1998 to evaluate the reefs recovery. Data is collected on the local sea cucumber, lobster and octopus fisheries. Assessment of turtle populations and nesting behaviour are studied and involves a tagging programme. Plankton and incidental whale shark activities are also monitored. There is ongoing work carried out with local schools and community groups to promote conservation. GVI's local partners include: * Seychelles Centre for Marine Research and Technology and Marine Parks Authority (SCMRT-MPA) * Ministry of Environment * Marine Conservation Society of the Seychelles (MCSS) * Island Conservation Society The data collected with the help of GVI volunteers not only aids conservation in the Seychelles, but is incorporated into the Coral Reef Degradation of the Indian Ocean (CORDIO) reports and Clive Wilkinson's Status of Reefs of the World reports. Training of expedition members is very rigorous in order to achieve scientifically reliable data. Scientific professionals ensure 100% pass rate in training before actual research is undertaken. First Aid & CPR training is provided along with all health and safety protocols relevant to the expedition and university/college credits may also be available. Global Vision International Critical conservation and humanitarian projects in over 30 countries rely on GVI for volunteers, promotion and direct funding. GVI works locally with its partners to promote sustainable development through environment research, conservation and education. GVI volunteers benefit from exceptional support, training and an internship scheme. For more information about GVI visit www.gvi.co.uk Ten-week expedition members are eligible for GVI scholarships to extend their field experience by a further research phase. Some previous expedition members have also gone on to work with our partners such as the Marine Conservation Society of the Seychelles (MCSS). An internship involving whale shark biology, populations, migrations and their relationship with plankton is also available with MCSS from August until October.
