HSV with RT-PCR

I am posting a query for a friend of mine:

When looking for HSV (A DNA virus) she has read published articles saying to
run RT-PCR.  Once you get the PCR product are there any other
protocols/procedures that need to be done?

I appreciate any information you may be able to pass on.
