	GENETIC DIAGNOSTICS: FORWARD WITH FORESIGHT

The UK Technology Foresight Health and Life Sciences Panel reviewed long-term
trends in science, health care, health-related industry, and non-medical
applications of the life sciences, and assessed the principal opportunities and
challenges. One of the priority areas in the recommendations from this Panel was
diagnostic applications of molecular biology.

The Diagnostics Club is holding a Workshop on Monday 15th April 1996 at Hulme
Hall, University of Manchester, UK to examine and flesh-out what are the UK's
R&D and commercial strengths and weaknesses in genetic-based diagnostics; and
what can be done to address the weaknesses and utilize the strengths.

The Workshop will take the format of introductory speakers prior to the
delegates dividing into four (preselected) interest discussion groups, namely:
Sample preparation for genetic testing, Automation, Multi-mutation detection,
and Intellectual Property Rights. When reconvened, the Group leaders and
Raconteurs will present the conclusions developed by their (own) groups. It is
anticipated that the discussion groups will come up with a list of future
activities to drive forward the UK genetics-based diagnostics industry to the
benefit of all.
