Heterologous complementation in Drosophila?

We do not work with Drosophila, but are interested in
complementing some of the Drosophila mutants with a gene from
another eukaryotic organism.

Is anyone aware of experiments (published or not) whereby stable
transformation and expression of a heterologous eukaryotic gene
was shown to complement a Drosophila mutant deficient in an
equivalent function?

We are interested in any suggests from Drosophila researchers
which may help us avoid common or previously encountered problems
with similar experiments.

As an aside: Would most people consider such an experiment
(if complementation works) strong enough evidence to assign a
function to the heterologous gene? ie. How strict is
complementation?

Thanks in advance for any advise and comments
