Drosophila experiments- high school/science fair

I have a daughter who is interested in attempting a science fair project
involving the effect on development/mutations of fruit flies by exposure
to microwaves (using home microwave oven) &/or X-rays (we have a dentist
who is a good friend). Can anyone suggest sources of information that
might be useful in this field that a v. bright gr. 10 student and her
parents (biologist/biochemist) might understand?
