Following Mark D. Garfinkel's posting you might like to know more about
the inclusion of theses in the FlyBase bibliography, citations from
Dissertation Abstracts and the citations from theses and Dissertation
Abstracts in FlyBase genes and aberrations files.

This is a table of the number of theses and the number of records from
Dissertation Abstracts in the FlyBase bibliography by decade:

                 theses Diss. Abs
1910 5
1920 27
1930 60
1940 97
1950 195 29
1960 434 226
1970 1020 410
1980 1331 175
1990 827 1

The numbers of different citations in the genes and aberrations files are:

theses: 53
Diss. Abs. 1

Obtaining theses for inclusion in the biblography is no easy task, at least
on a world wide basis. Most that we have have either come from the
Herskowitz bibliographies or have been found by browsing on various
on line library catalogs. FlyBase has not, yet, had the time to
systematically search either Dissertation Abstracts or the various
other national collections of theses titles and/or summaries. Moreover,
as is very evident from the numbers of citations, very few theses have
been curated, either by Lindsley and Zimm or by FlyBase.

FlyBase will in principle include material published only in a thesis. Help
from the community is sought ! We would also like to receive bibliographic
records of theses. Please send any material to flybase-updates at morgan.harvard.edu.
