Ecology of D. mel. summary

I received many responses to my post regarding the ecology of D. 
melanogaster.  Most responders agreed with my assertion that there
appears to be a dearth of studies on the ecology of natural populations
of D. melanogaster, but not all.  Almost all responders provided references
which I will share below.  I will also add some that I've run across in 
the mean time.  As you will see, there are many (and they all have 
bibliographies!), however I haven't yet found a nitty-gritty description
of the ecology of D. mel. around garbage cans and in fruit markets and such.
