Not so Hot Shocks

I promised to post a summary of approaches to activating hsp promoters
without using heat. Two methods were proposed from multiple sources. they
include:
1. Ethanol (at least in tissue culture)
2. Anoxia - using metabolic poisons, or prolonged exposure to
nitrogen or carbon dioxide.
Thanks to Tim Westwood who directed me to a paper by Ashburner and Bonner
(Cell 17, 241-254, 1979) which identifies inducers of the heat shock
response, with the caveat that some "activators" may cause HS puffs, but
not transcription.
