war with fruit flies

hi.  i'm just a simple layman with a simple problem: fruit flies are
breeding in my house (and litter box).  so my simple question is "how do
i get rid of them?"  is there any sort of natural repellant for these
things, or maybe something i should be doing and i'm not (or something
i'm not doing and i should)?  thank you for your patience and
understanding but, most of all, for your cooperation.
