My lab partners and I are doing a lab on Drosophila(of course), and we
are unsure as to how to determine whether our traits are sex-linked or
not. We were given the F1 and F2 generations to observe; and were
expected to determine what the genotypes of the parents were. We are
studying body color: wild-type females with yellow bodied males.
Our tally of the F1 generation produced 24 wild-type females, 17 yellow
bodied males, 6 yellow females, and 8 wild-type males. the F2 generation
yeilded 10 wild females, 28 yellow males, 22 yellow females, and 6
wild-type males. If we were to hypothesize that the parents were
homozygous for their respective color, could the small number of yellow
females and wild males in the F1 generation be recombinant, or would
they have to be heterozygous??? Go figure. could we have misjudged the
sexes while observing the flies, or what??? Any suggestions would
surely help us clueless ones!!!!! We really appreciate your time!!!!
