Subject: Postdoctoral Position Available
A postdoctoral position is available to study the
function of the ma-l gene. Genetic and biochemical
evidence suggests that MAL is responsible for the
acquisition of the terminal sulfur ligand of the
molybdopterin cofactor. The sulfurated form of the
cofactor is required for the activity of a number of
molybdenum hydroxylases including xanthine
dehydrogenase and aldehyde oxidase. The biosynthesis
of the MoCF is an ancient, highly conserved pathway, but
the mechanism of the terminal sulfuration process is
completely unknown. The amino portion of the MAL
sequence is similar to a bacterial sulfurase, but the
carboxy terminus is unique.
Expertise with Drosophila genetics is not a
requirement, but familiarity with cloning and protein-
protein interactions is essential. Salary and benefits
would be at the first or second year NIH
postdoctoral level.
