POSTDOCTORAL POSITION

A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory directed by
Mario Coluzzi at the Institute of Parasitology, University of Rome
"La Sapienza", to carry out molecular biology studies on the african
malaria mosquito Anopheles gambiae.

The position is funded by the EU-RTN programme in the frame of the
Network on: "Insects innate immunity and the critical stages of
malaria-mosquito interactions". Other members of the Network are:
Andrea Crisanti (Imperial College, London), Jules Hoffmann (CNRS,
Strasbourg), Fotis Kafatos (EMBL, Heidelberg), Christos Louis
(IMBB, Crete), Robert Sinden (Imperial College, London) and
Andy Waters (Leiden University, Leiden).

The successful applicant will work under the supervision of Dr. Bruno
Arca' on the molecular characterization of secreted factors and
potential sporozoite receptors expressed in the salivary glands of
Anopheles gambiae (Arca' et al., 1999 Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 96,
1516-1521; Lombardo et al., 2000 J. Biol. Chem. 31, 23861-23868).
Aims of the project are: (i) the characterization of secreted factors
involved in hematophagy; (ii) the isolation of salivary
gland-specific promoters; and (iii) the identification of gene
products involved in the invasion of mosquito salivary glands by
Plasmodium sporozoites.

Candidates should hold a PhD or have equivalent experience. A sound
background in molecular biology is required. Experience in vector
biology/parasitology/molecular entomology would be an advantage.

NOTE: only citizens from EU-member states (excluding Italy) are
eligible.

Send application including a detailed CV and three letters of
reccomendation to:
