Two Technician Positions Available: Drosophila developmental
neurogenetics

Job Titles: Research Specialist
Beginning: Spring 2001
Salary: high $20s - low 30s, depending on experience
Each position is funded by a 5-year NIH grant.
Position 1
Project: hormonal and genetic control of neuronal remodeling during
brain development
Job duties will include preparation of primary neuronal cultures from
dissected Drosophila brains; immunostaining and fluorescence (including
confocal) microscopy of whole brains and cultured neurons; basic genetic
manipulations; computer-based analysis of neuronal size and shape. This
position will involve working with a postdoctoral research associate.
Required qualifications: stereomicroscopy and compound microscopy
experience; immunostaining experience; excellent organizational and
communication skills.
Preferred qualifications: experience with microdissection; confocal
microscopy; cell/tissue culture; computer graphics & image anaysis.
Position 2
Project: cellular and molecular genetic analysis of CNS metamorphosis
Job duties will include neuroanatomical analysis of mutant brain
phenotypes using immunostaining and histological methods; PCR and
Southern analysis of mutant alleles; transcript localization by in situ
hybridization; sequence analysis using online databases; ordering of
supplies and equipment. This position will involve supervision of one
or more undergraduate lab assistants.
Required qualifications: understanding of basic Mendelian genetics;
molecular biology/genetics experience; stereomicroscopy and compound
microscopy experience; excellent organizational and communication
skills.
Preferred qualifications: experience with Drosophila genetics, including
P-element insertional mutagenesis; immunostaining and/or histochemistry;
microdissection; computer-based sequence analysis.
