THE UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER

SCHOOL OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES

Postdoctoral Research Associate: Genetics of Drosophila wing shape
This 3-year post (BBSRC funded), will investigate the developmental and
genetic basis of wing shape variation in Drosophila melanogaster. The
project will use the DrosDel deficiency stock collection to carry out a
large-scale screen for chromosome regions with defects on wing shape and
its variability, and their evolutionary role will be assessed with fly
lines from populations of different geographical origins. Wing shape will
be quantified with state of the art methods of geometric morphometrics.
You should have a strong interest in Drosophila genetics and quantitative
analysis and possess a PhD degree in a relevant biological
discipline. Quantitative and computing skills are essential as is the
ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a
research team. You will have good interpersonal and communication skills
and preferably experience in Drosophila genetics, quantitative genetics,
morphometrics or multivariate statistics.
The starting salary will be GBP 20,311 per annum. The appointment is for a
period of one year in the first instance and, upon successful completion of
this probationary period, is available for a further two years.
Informal enquiries can be addressed to Dr Chris Klingenberg, Tel: 0161 275
