TWO POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATES

PLANT PHYSIOLOGICAL ECOLOGY / ECOSYSTEM ECOLOGY

We anticipate two post-doctoral positions will be available fall 1998 or
early-spring 1999. The successful applicants for both positions must be
willing to work at desert field sites for extended periods. A Ph.D. in
ecology or related field is required by the starting date. Knowledge and
experience with stable isotopes, soil N and C, and trace gas analysis is
desirable.

POSITION ONE. The successful applicant will work on a multi-investigator,
NSF-funded project that examines the effects of elevated carbon dioxide on
ecosystem dynamics in the Mojave Desert. The fieldwork for the project
will be at the Nevada Desert FACE Facility (NDFF). The Arkansas research
group will address the effects of elevated carbon dioxide on nitrogen
fixation by biological soil crusts, soil nitrogen transformations and
stable isotope composition, litter quality, and gaseous nitrogen loss.

POSITION TWO. The successful applicant will work on a multi-investigator,
NSF-funded project that examines how variation in the magnitude and
distribution of moisture pulses alters the structure and function of arid
land ecosystems. The fieldwork for the project will be in Canyonlands
National Park and surrounding areas. The Arkansas research group will
address nitrogen fixation by biological soil crusts, plant nitrogen
acquisition, soil nitrogen and carbon transformations and stable isotope
composition, and gaseous nitrogen loss from crusts and soils.

To apply please send an application letter with research interests and
experience, CV, reprints, and names, addresses, and E-mail addresses of
three references to Dr. R. Dave Evans, Department of Biological Sciences,
University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, AR 72701. Phone: 501-575-7093.
Email: devans at comp.uark.edu. Additional information is also given at the
web site: http://comp.uark.edu/~devans/evans.html. Review of applications
will begin 1 September.
