POSITION: RESEARCH ASSOCIATE
SUPERVISOR OF CORE FACILITIES FOR
IMAGING,
AND MOLECULAR AND CELLULAR
BIOLOGY
DIVISION OF MATHEMATICS AND NATURAL
SCIENCES
DUTIES:
Responsibility for the proper operation and maintenance of core
instruments within Core Facilities including:
The Imaging Core consists principally of a phosphorimager/fluorimeter, a
fluorescence activated cell sorter or FACS, a transmission electron
microscope, a
microplate scintillation counter/luminometer, and a Meridian confocal
microscope. The Molecular and Cell Biology Core consists of gamma
counter, several
high-speed ultracentrifuges, a thermal cycler, scintillation counter, an
HPLC system, a pulsed-field gel system, a peptide synthesizer, as well as
several other smaller
items and low temperature freezers.
Assist or collaborate with users in carrying out needed research
or obtaining needed information utilizing core instruments.
Budget time on instruments for prospective users, and maintain
records regarding use (i.e. hourly logs), service contracts and other
supplies needed to
operate instruments. Maintain archives of published research,
funding applications and other activities resulting from use of core
instrumentation. Develop a
budget and cost analysis including scheduling of fees for various
types of users (QC/CUNY/non-CUNY/corporate).
Prepare reports to Dean, Advisory Committee and CUNY Central
detailing progress towards meeting criteria for self-support of Core
Facilities.
On a regular basis, disseminate information regarding availability
of core facilities. This may include oral or written presentations,
website information,
brochures, etc.
Initiate and collaborate on proposals for external funding as
needed to upgrade and maintain core facilities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: A Doctorate or equivalent degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Cell
Biology Molecular Biology or related field. Demonstrated experience in
operation of a
confocal microscope or other computer assisted imaging instrumentation. A
record of continuous research productivity since obtaining the doctorate.
Prior to
interview, three letters of recommendation.
Preferred: Knowledge of computerized word processing, data base, and
spreadsheet applications. Experience in preparation of applications for
research funding.
Experience in operating core instruments as listed in the "Duties"
section above.
SALARY:
Range: $29,538 -- $80,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience.
