linkage versus pleiotropy

Dear Readers,

I have searched unsuccessfully for an article that discusses the relative
importance of linkage and pleiotropy for a given mutant trait, and
wondered if anyone would be willing to suggest one or, perhaps, could
explain to me what sort of genetic analysis is sufficient (backcrossing,
recurrent selection, mass selection, etc.) in order for a given phenotype
to be completely attributable to either pleiotropy or to linkage.

Any takers?

Sincerely,
Colin Purrington
