There are regions called the pseudo-autosomal regions on the X and Y chromosomes which
do in fact exchange material during male meiosis, but these (I think there are 2) are small
in comparison to the overall size of the chromosomes. There is no difference in shape between
the X and Y chromosomes. The Y is smaller than the  X chromosome but they are both linear DNA
molecules.
