I think there is a place for citations such as:
Smith J. AUTOMAP v 1.2 [Computer Program]. New York: U of HK, 1997.
especially where algorithms have changed completely since first described,
and the program documentation may be the only place where some of this
material is covered. The documentation for MENDEL, SLINK, and CRI-MAP are
partial examples. Finally they offer a central location for a complete
bibliography. What, for example, does one give as a citation for analysis
using LODLINK or REGD, other than either the manual or the program? Would
references to Bonney's papers be needed as well? Finally, some citations
are to posters or abstracts which describe the programs, surely not a
peer-reviewed guarantee greater than the reference to the program itself.
