GenBank Update files nc1105.aso.Z and nc1105.flat.Z, installed
on our ftp server on the morning of 11/05/1999, contained 21484
records that lacked sequence version numbers. Here's how the
VERSION line appeared for an affected record in nc1105.flat.Z :

This problem stems from changes to the manner in which GSS
sequences are processed at NCBI that were made last week.
We have repaired the problem and confirmed that the version
numbers are now being generated correctly for these records.
Since users might have difficulty removing/patching 20,000+
records in their local systems, we have decided to delete the 1105
update files from the NCBI ftp site, and to make sure that
tomorrow's 1109 update contains *all* GenBank records processed
at NCBI since this problem first arose.
Loading the 1109 update should resolve any content problems that
might have resulted from processing the 1105 update.
We regret this error and apologize for any inconvenience that
it may have caused.

PS: The nc1109 update files are expected to be rather large
(on the order of 400MB) due to a recent influx of new EST data
originating at DDBJ.
