Ftp problems continue

Hi John and David:
Our attempts to connect during the weekend were unsuccessful.
In addition, new DNS problems cropped up. On Saturday and Sunday,
none of the three NCBI ftp hostnames could be resolved. That
had not been a problem before. But as of today, Tuesday, that DNS
problem has gone away, but the ftp sessions are still unsuccessful.
We thank Don Gilbert for finding an alternative way to update the
bio-mirror.net site and thereby take some of the urgency out of this
problem for us and all concerned. We were able to run our ftp process
on his server, although his latest message indicates that bio-mirror.net
continues to have problems with ftp as well.
Today we tested NCBI with three other ftp clients, this time using a
Linux ftp client that defaults to passive mode, as well as ftp
from a browser, Netscape 4.7 and IE5. None of these clients succeed.
Looking at our system firewall logs, we can see that NCBI's new ftp
server is responding with an ident request, probably for rarp purposes.
We normally drop ident, but for these tests we made sure to allow them.
The result is the same -- a partial display of your banner message
and an unresponsive session, as shown here, using the Linux ftp client:
ftp -p ftp1.ncbi.nih.gov
Connected to ftp1.ncbi.nih.gov (126.96.36.199).
After several minutes we give up and interrupt. We wonder if the ftp
server's banner message (the rest of "Warning Notice!...") is too
long or was created with DOS-style CR+NL line termination? Those
things can sometimes cause trouble. If you know of another ftp site
that is using the same ftp server that NCBI has just installed, please
send me the URL and I will attempt a test session there as well.
