Artefacts with PAS-staining?

The PAS stain is based on oxidation of a 1,2 dialcohol to form a
dialdehyde followed by a double Schiff reaction of sulfate with the
aldehyde. So if a protein contains, or can be oxidized to, aldehyde
groups, it may be PAS positive.
