As an allergy sufferer, and one who is not trained in medicine, I would like
to get a fairly simple, yet comprehensive explanation of the immunological
processes involved with inhalant and food allergies. I have enough knowledge
of chemistry that you won't have to pull too many punches.
I'd also like to know what new experimental treatments for allergy are now
being tested and why they may be better than the currently accepted
treatments desensitization injections.
Has it been determined why allergy is becoming more common? Anecdotes I've
heard said that allergy was quite uncommon in the 19th century.
How effective is EPD (Enzyme Potentiated Desensitization, I believe) for
treating allergy? I was told it is the preferred method in England, but
that it is uncommon in the States.
I've heard from a not-so-reliable source that allergies may be aggravated
by an overgrowth of various yeasts in the body, which may be due to the overuse
of anti-biotics, or some other unknown cause. It is claimed that the body
becomes allergic to these yeast proteins.
My allergist mentioned that Johns Hopkins is at the cutting edge of research
in the area of allergy. Anybody on this newsgroup from there?
Thank you.
