              EMBL Data Library/European Bioinformatics Institute

The EMBL Data Library is a group within the European Molecular Biology
Laboratory, an international research institute located in Heidelberg,
Germany.  During 1994, the group will be re-located to near Cambridge (UK)
and become the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI).

The Data Library/EBI produces information products for molecular
biologists, such as databases of genetic sequence information, and
distributes them to a world-wide user community.  They are used in a
variety of applications in medical research, biotechnology and the Human
Genome Project.  Much of the work is carried out in collaboration with
GenBank in the United States, the DNA Database of Japan, and the
University of Geneva.

We are seeking candidates for the following post:


   To work on an international project to establish a new database of
   immunological interest.  The work will involve database installation,
   the development of database access tools, user interface design and
   research into database integration.  Applicants should be biologists
   with a strong computing background or computer scientists with profound
   biological knowledge and should be familiar with UNIX or VMS computer
   systems. Substantial programming experience in C and experience with
   biological databases are essential.  Knowledge of immunology and
   experience of computer networking will be advantageous.

Personal initiative and self-motivation are essential for candidates.  The

The contract will be for two years in the first instance, starting as soon
as possible. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of
review. Staff would be expected to spend some months working in Heidelberg
before the establishment of the EBI near Cambridge, UK, in mid-1994.
