MORE UNKNOWN ORGANISMS

Regarding my first posting, as to whether or not it is possible to determine
what an invading organism is without any prior knowledge about the organism 
itself (i.e. previously unknown to medical science). IS there a way to "nail" 
down the culprit without using antibodies. I would be grateful to hear from
anybody with any good ideas.
