available by FTP from BALROG.NCI.NIH.GOV

    Leukocyte Differentiation Antigen Database -- by Stephen Shaw

THIS IS A TEST VERSION. PLEASE FAX or E-MAIL POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE COMMENTS

  Please replace with updated version by about March 1994

To install LDAD perform the following:

1) Make sure that you have 5 MB of free disk space on your hard disk

     (of which 3MB will be used after installation is complete)

2) Enter the statement files=50 in your config.sys file

3) Make a subdirectory on your hard disk called LDAD

4) Copy all 3 files into that subdirectory

5) Change to that subdirectory and enter the command "Install"

    This will start a batch file which unpacks the files.

    After successful unpacking, you are free to erase

    the large file called LDADARC.exe to free up disk space

7) To run the program, simply enter the command LDAD



LDAD is designed for IBM-compatibles. Its speed is determined by hard disk

  speed.  It is improved by disk caching and by extended memory.

LDAD also runs (more slowly and with some problems) on MacIntoshes using an

  emulation package.  For additional information see the file readme.mac

LDAD supports PostScript, HPLaserJetII and HPLaserJetIII printers.

Although LDAD was not designed for MACINTOSHES, I have made sure that it is

accessible via emulation.  Since many of you are experienced MAC user

(while I am not), I would appreciate feedback (to pass on to others) as to

how to improve its use or performance



The only emulation which I know works is "SoftPC Professional v3.1".  It is

from Insignia Software (800-848-7677) and costs about $185. 

My limited use on the MAC with SoftPC has taught me the following:

    *Processor requirements

        *LDAD with SoftPC runs painfully slowly on a IIci (a 020 processor)

         but quite well on a Quadra (a 040 processor)

        *It seems to do OK with 8MB, depending on configuration.

    *Files

        *You need the command FILES=50 in your config.sys

        *Sometimes SOFTPC incorrectly reports too many files anyway.  If

         that happens you have to get out of SOFTPC and back in again.

    *Sceen graphics

        *You need to configure as VGA (not EGA)

    *Printing

        *Make sure you configure for POSTSCRIPT

        *You may need to get entirely out of SOFTPC before printing will

         occur

    *Mouse

        *It does not successfully emulate the PC mouse.  Therefore, a few

         sections of the graphics will be inaccessible to MAC users (at least

         at present).
