To suggest that the foreign/non-foreign paradigm has weaknesses
is quite interesting and probably true, but
wouldn't a "threshold" model for acceptable levels
of metabolic peptides also explain the response discrepancy as
is suggested by Dr. Matzinge? This would be more in line with the
positive/negative selection processes and T-cell responses that have
been demonstrated in transgenic animals. A threshold model could also
include thresholds for stress proteins such as heat shock products loaded
onto MHC.
