Dear Sir,
Could someone enlighten me? I want to know more about current
research on Food Allergy. My friend is currently seeing an allergist at
Johns Hopkins
Medical University. She was wondering if anyone else has any
pertinant information. Her diet is extremely limited. She
cannot have egg whites or yolks, lamb, pork, duck, rabbit,
dairy products, goat milk, crab, salmon, tuna, almonds,
brazilnuts, coconuts, pecans, walnuts (English and black),
peanuts, green peas, cabbage, cauliflower, cucumber, lettuce,
okra, onions, pumpkin, radish, spinach, squash, tomato, turnip,
pineapple, chocolate, coffee, buckwheat, apples, avocados,
bananas, cantelope, cherries, cranberries, grapefruit, lemons,
oranges, clove, dill, ginger, mustard, olives, oregano, sage,
sesame seed, thyme, vanilla, mushrooms, baker's or brewer's
yeast, mangos, papayas, starfruit, pears, and apricots. This
is a small portion of what she cannot have. Her allergist has
linked each of these with an increase in IgE levels. All of
these allergic reactions include respiratory problems (choking,
asthma, allergic rhinitis, blocked eustachian tubes), ecezma,
hives, angioedema, allergic conjunctivitis, and in the past
five years intestinal cramping and diarrhea. Food allergy has
been a life long problem for her. Occasionally, after no
exposure to a particular food for five years or so, she will
stop reacting to the tests. However, if she begins to eat
small quantities, within a few months, she begins to react to
the foods again. A test will again show positive for allergy
to the food. She is currently on Tilade inhaler, PBZ,
Vancenase, Ventolin, and Benedryl when necessary. Also
Gastrochrome is used occasionally. Any ideas? Please write to
