Cord Blood is a rich source of haemopoetic stem cells - the very cells
that are used to repopulate the marrow of a patient having a
traditional bone marrow transplant. Cord blood transplants are very
much in vogue in the USA today and in the UK, a cord blood bank has
very recently been set up in Bristol. Obviously this will help
alleviate the shortage of conventional donors. There may also be an
advantage (don't quote me) in that graft vs host disease may be lesm
severe?
