On behalf of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Immunology & Aging
(IASIA) Board of Directors and the International Program Planning
Committee, it is my pleasure to invite you to the First International
Conference on Immunology and Aging to be held in Washington, D.C. on
June 16-19, 1996.
Within the past decade there has been an impressive expansion of our
understanding of the changes in immune function that occur over the
life span. Although descriptive analyses have been in the literature
for several decades, this work has now reached a new level with the
introduction of more precise cellular and molecular biological
approaches. For example, it is now possible to examine genes that
may regulate aging or susceptibility to age-related diseases.
Changes in immune function affect many of the diseases that impact
persons as they age, including cancer, arthritis, osteoporosis,
diabetes, AIDS, Alzheimer's and lupus, to mention a few. The Program
Planning Committee has intentionally designed this meeting to act as a
bridge between basic science, focused on understanding the mechanisms
that underlie the immune system, and the application of this knowledge
to new prevention and clinical treatment of age-related diseases. The
meeting is designed to provide new, as well as practical information
to basic researchers, clinicians, and public health specialists. A
special effort is being made to encourage the participation of new and
younger researchers and clinicians, in all aspects of the program.
For both physicians and nurses, we are currently applying for
Continuing Medical Education (CME) and Continuing Nursing Education
(CNE) credits for attendance at this meeting.
The Conference has been specially designed to provide you with
numerous opportunities to meet old friends, find new friends,
participate in social events, and enjoy the wonderful sights of
Washington, D.C. For Conference participants, there will even be a
special tour of the National Institutes of Health facilities, one of
the world's leading biomedical research centers.
All of us look forward to this Conference being an important step in
fostering increased international collaboration regarding the immune
system and its relationship to the aging process.
