Immunohistochemistry

When doing immunohistochemistry, do you have to use a specific secondary Ab for  each application, or are most secondaries generally "multi-purpose". If they are, how is it that they can recognize the primary specifically. Is it because the secondary binds to the Fc fragment of the primary?
