As far as I know, the V3 loop is not correlated with
reproductive capacity overall.  The V3 loop will affect
how well the virus replicates in different cell lines:
The SI, T-cell tropic, CXCR4-using strains have often been found
to be "rapid/high" growers in stimulated T-cell cultures
while the NSI, Macrophage tropic, CCR5-using strains
are often described as "slow-low" growers on stimulated T-cells.
However, each type grows well in cells containing the
appropriate coreceptors (CCR5 or CXCR4).
High positive charge in the V3 loop, particularly at
postions 11 and 25 (counting Cys at the NH2 end of the
Cys-to-Cys V3 loop as position 1), is correllated with
use of the CXCR4 receptor and SI phenotype.
Subtype C rarely becomes charged and is rarely found
to be SI.  Subtype D isolates very often have high
positive charge.  Other subtypes of HIV-1 are intermediate
between these two extremes.
